Description

For sale is a whimsical mid-century modern style tea set made by Rosenthal for export to the US, most likely in the 1950s, featuring multi-colored striped cups and serving ware against solid color saucer and small plate sets. Set is complete with tea pot (with lid), creamer, sugar bowl, and service for five (cup, saucer, and small plate/bread and butter plate), 18 pieces altogether. I'm not sure if the sugar bowl originally had a lid but if there was it is now absent. Cups, teapot, sugar bowl, and creamer are all decorated in a vertical stripe pattern. Service sets are all in different colors - some of the like-colored pieces have some shade variation (see photos, the most obvious differences are the pink saucer and mustard colored small plate). Production dates look to have varied so these may have come from slightly different batches (or color change has happened over time). Undersides are stamped with the green and gold import cartouche - these are actually superimposing the original makers marks which are visible underneath with backlighting (see close-up photos). Stylistically this set looks like it is of Raymond Loewy's design ("2000" pattern) and as it is unmarked as such is likely from the mid 1950s. Set is in very good overall condition as shown - photos are of the exact pieces available for sale. No cracks or crazing - there is one very small chip to the rim of the creamer (near the handle), otherwise no chips as well. Some scratches to the colored finish, most notably the yellow bread and butter plate but also some scratches to the teapot and creamer - buyer should be aware that the color finish is matte and does scratch much easier than the glossy glazed parts of the pieces. Wash with soap and water only (not only to protect from scratching but to avoid any interaction with the painted surfaces). The porcelain is extremely fine and thus will be very carefully shipped with plenty of cushioning and will also be double boxed to ensure safe transport. Local pick-up is also available.
