Following is the obituary of the artist, as posted on ancestry.com by Michael Davis J Royal Telford passed away a few years ago. Best I know he had a residence in Boerne TX. Also a place at the coast where he painted mostly watercolors of costal objects, shells etc. And in the TX hill country painted country scenes. In 1996 a Boerne framing shop stated his art at the time was increasing at 10% a year. At this time this is about all I know, I was searching for an outlet to sell one of his paintings in Boerne when I came upon this site. I knew Jim very well during the seventies we were always at the same art shows. I visited Corpus Christi and Port Aransas to visit him and go fishing there and he visited S.A. many times. Jim was a native of Corpus Christi as is Carol Burnett. Jim told me he knew her and that she had some of his watercolors, I didn't believe him until he gave me a snap shot of Carol and one of his pieces beside her on a couch, I still have the photo. This was about 1975-6 so there was no photo shop or anything then. Jim was a wonder person and a good friend. Jim left C.C. and doing the seascapes and it's animals and moved to capture animals and wildlife in the hill country. He changed locations and his name on his artwork from J. Royal Telford to James R. Telford. He told me that the name change kept him from going back to what he did in C.C. I'm his cousin and grew up with him and his sister. He was multi-talented and much admired in the family. He could sing, play the piano and clarinet, he was a whiz at anything dramatic (my mother loved that since it was her educational profession), he did cartoons in his letters all his life. He graduated from high school in Corpus Christi, attended U of Houston and joined the Navy by 1951. After hte Navy enlistment, he moved to Holywood to try his turn at acting. He roomed with Jack Nicholson for awhile when they were both just starting out. He was not mechanically able but would always give it a try. My children enjoyed visiting with him. After he moved to Boerne, he even entertained my grandchildren. He was generous to a fault and very family oriented. He left Hollywood to go home and take care of his father when Uncle Roy was so ill. Then he stayed on to care for his mother. You would have to have known my Aunt Mae to understand what a task that was for an artist who needed to concentrate on what he was doing. He took an interest in his nephews and neice. Even took one of them to New York City for a play opening. I don't remember if it was with Carol Burnett or Imogene Coca. What a thoughtful person. He died in 2003 at a friend's ranch. He moved to corpus Christi 35 years ago and met him in his home. I purchased 4 paintings from him. They are all originals, signed and in his frames. I have had them in my homes all of this time. He told me the story of living with Jack Nicholson and Carol Burnett. He said that they both had his art work in their homes. J. Royal was interesting. He was so friendly and informative. He loved his work. He and his friend Jerry Siegel (Kingsville, Texas) painted coastal scenes. They displayed at the yearly BayFest in Corpus Christi for years when the festival was top notch. My name is Michael Davis and Telford and I were close friends for a while in N.Y. We met through mutual friends and they were all my guests for opening night of "Woman of the Year" with Lauren Bacall. When Telford brought Bobby to N.Y, they stayed with me in my apartment ! Small wortd huh! I have several small shore watercolors and a construction piece of an old storefront with a window = and Bobbys photo is in the window dressed like an outlaw !! I treasure the both. I was saddened to hear of Telford's passing but he left a wonderful legacy of art and love. He was a very bright light in my life ! THANKS AND GOOD LUCK
