Vintage Signed Original Painting Dunkirk WW II by French artist Jack Ottaviano Vintage Signed Original Painting Dunkirk WW II by French artist Jack Ottaviano (1924-1988) titled "Dunkerque Chantiers / Dunkirk Boat Slips" This is a lovely oil on board (cardboard) painting of Dunkirk by French artist Jack Ottaviano. The painting is most likely from the 1950s-60s, as this is when he explored painting on themes related to World War II. This painting is signed on the lower right, Ottaviano and there is an affixed label on the back of the frame, typed with the title in both French and English "Dunkerque Chantiers / Dunkirk Boat Slips" Jack OTTAVIANO (1924 – 1988) born, France. Ottaviano was a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Graduated in 1948 from the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, he exhibited that year at the "Salon for those under thirty". Various personal exhibitions in Paris, New York, Washington, Lyon, and Toulouse will make his talent manifest. In 1952, J. OTTAVIANO won the "Prix Fénéon".From the war, OTTAVIANO will retain the harshness and will come back often to the theme of World War II. From his long walks in the heart of the Parisian suburbs and along the shipyards of Dunkirk, OTTAVIANO will collect the giant dreams of a man of flesh, fragile and vain, with the haunting horizon, The artist crosses the threshold of this canvas-screen and sinks calmly into the palette of shadows. The descent into hell is made in the breath of the bombardments. From the insular plain will be born the Marines (54-57), will be reborn ruins and stricken cities (Caen).
