Description

This stunning Royal Delft Scheveningen Cloisonne tile, titled "A Woman with a Basket ", was part of a series featuring people in Dutch traditional regional dress. This ceramic tile features a woman in traditional Scheveningen clothes, or klederdracht in Dutch, holding a basket and watching the sea. Scheveningen traditionally is a community of fishermen and the art depicts a fisherman's wife looking out at sea, presumably waiting for her husband's return. Scheveningen is a Dutch coastal town that is now part of The Hague. This specific tile was made by the Porceleyne Fles, the most famous of the Delft Pottery houses in the Netherlands. This original piece features a multicolor design of the described scene carved into clay, fired and hand-painted with intricate details before being glazed. The method used is known as linocut. Dating the tile is difficult as it was initially made in the early 1940s and then production continued until the early 80s. Most likely this time was made in the early 1950s based on the estate sale it was purchased it from several years ago. This work of art highlights the skill and dedication of the artist who created it and has their signature in the back. They signed/stamped the back of the tile with their mark. This square tile measures 4.75 inches by 4.75 inches and is ready to be wired and hung. This is in great condition with no noticed chips, cracks, or scratches on the front. The back does show a little wear. Please see pictures for details.
