Description
Here is a Royal Copenhagen Two Monks Fishing Figurine 1605 . This is a version of Georg Thylstrup 's (1884-1930) wonderful 1915 design with whimsical Blue Fluted / Musselmalet Decorations . This is a very rare and special figurine . It is large , almost 9 inches tall. It depicts two monks fishing. They have caught a spectacular fish and work together to pull it up out of the water. I see in it the young disciple on the right lovingly supporting the elder monk as he carefully pulls up the magnificent fish. There is much brotherly love. The monks kneel side by side, and from the back they appear almost connected, as one. The piece is complex and wonderful . It has underglaze painting with blue fluted floral motifs. The model number 1605 is incised under the glaze on the bottom of the figurine. The figurine is factory first quality . Thylstrup's signature as well as '1915' is incised under the glaze on the side figurine (see final photo). The painter's signature, an entwined "AA", appears next to a painted crown and the 3-wave Royal Copenhagen marking on the bottom of the figurine. I am not certain when exactly the figurine was produced but I believe it was early 20th century, around 1915-1925. The porcelain has a wonderful grey color, similar to very early pieces, and the decorations are whimsical and ornate, showing great painterly skill and creativity. The glaze is very nice, and has an almost celadon-like quality. This figurine is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips or repairs . There are some discrete firing marks and glaze irregularities from factory production on the surface of the piece. Please carefully examine all the photos. The figurine is approximately 8 7/8 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide . Please examine the photos and description carefully and reach out with any questions!
