Description SYDNEY YATES JOHNSON (fl. 1890-1926) Description : An exceptional late 19th/early 20th century Large oil on canvas painting by the highly collected English School landscape painter Sidney Yates Johnson. This is an excellent example of the artist's oeuvre, the subject of which often featured seascapes and shore scenes to depict well-known locations throughout Yorkshire and Kent. His landscape views portrayed celebrated views across the British Isles. This painting features a stunning view of the coastal cliffs "Near Newquay Cornwall" as detailed on the plaque on the front of the piece which also includes his name. The painting is beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with shell and flower corner details and a gilt slip. The artist's recognizable signature is seen in the lower left corner. Provenance: From a large estate in Massachusetts. CONDITION : Overall, the condition is good considering it's age. There is a scratch in the sky area but It doesn't appear that noticeable or large and does not detract from the beauty of this piece. Otherwise the paint layer is stable and sound. Though the exact dates of the artist's life remain unknown, his exhibition period stemmed from 1880-1926. Johnson was a painter of landscapes, animal scenes, seascapes, and river/lake scenes. He painted a large proportion of his seascapes and shore scenes to depict well-known locations throughout Yorkshire and Kent, and his landscape views portrayed celebrated views across the British Isles. The majority of his works are signed with his trademark incised "sgraffito" technique, in which he scratches his name (and occasionally only "Johnson") into the wet paint of his canvases. He is known to have exhibited extensively across Great Britain, including the Royal Society of British Artists eleven times, Manchester City Art Gallery four times, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool three times, Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery four times, Dudley Gallery twelve times, Royal Hibernian Academy once and the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham eight times. Biography William P Rogers William P. Rogers (fl.1846-1872) was an Irish artist who is best known for his landscape and coastal subjects. Rogers studied art at the Royal Dublin Society's Drawing School, winning prizes there in 1850 and 1852. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin between 1848-1872, mostly of Wicklow and Wexford scenes, including two Scenes in the County of Wexford.
